UW receives grant to develop stem cell gene therapy
UW researchers have received $9.59 million from the National
Institutes of Health to develop fundamental approaches to stem
cell gene therapy for sickle cell disease and thalassemia.

Ballweg appointed to federal advisory committee
Ruth Ballweg, director of MEDEX Northwest, the University of
Washington's physician assistant program, has accepted a
three-year appointment to a committee formed to advise U.S.
Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala on policy
and program development for training in primary-care medicine
and dentistry.

Harborview R & T building dedication Sept. 23
The 10-story Research and Training Building at Harborview
Medical Center will be dedicated at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept.
23, in the building's lobby. The $79 million building is on the corner of
Ninth Avenue and Alder Street. A pedestrian tunnel links the building with
Harborview Hall, where many medical school faculty members
have offices.
