Wood to hold Endowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research

ouglas E. Wood, associate professor of surgery in the
Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has been named the first
holder of the UW's Endowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research. The
chair is funded by private donations.

Hartwell receives national award

eland Hartwell, professor of genetics and medicine and
director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center,
received the American Cancer Society's most prestigious award,
the Medal of Honor, at the society's annual meeting in Atlanta
Nov. 7.

Workforce center to conduct Pacific Basin study

WAMI Center for Health Workforce Studies researchers will
develop and implement a plan to improve the health of
underserved people living in six jurisdictions in the Pacific
Basin. This work is funded through a grant from the Health
Resources and Services Administration.

Senior fellow awarded
Christine Posavad, a senior fellow in laboratory medicine and
a research associate at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
Center, has received one of two $10,000 annual research awards
from the American Herpes
Foundation for her work on the
role of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in predicting severity of
opportunistic infections, specifically herpes simplex virus,
in HIV-infected patients.
