Health forum urged improved access
to medical advances

inding effective systems for distributing existing and future
vaccines within the poorest countries of the world could
profoundly reduce childhood death and disability, according to
speakers at the Global Health Forum Dec. 9 at the UW Health
Sciences Center.

Lee Hood leaving UW to establish private institute
P
aul G. Ramsey, vice president for medical affairs and dean of
the School of Medicine, announced Dec. 13 that Leroy Lee Hood,
founding chair of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology
and William Gates III Professor of Biomedical Sciences, is
leaving the UW faculty to form a private Institute for Systems
Biology.

Briefly
Palmiter named acting chair
Richard Palmiter will become acting chair of the UW Department
of Biochemistry, effective Feb. 1. He is a professor of
biochemistry and an investigator with the Howard Hughes
Medical Institute.
Kenneth
Walsh has served as chair of the department since
1992, and was acting chair for two years previously.
Palmiter is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
