Lee Hood leaving UW to establish private institute

P aul G. Ramsey, vice president for medical affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, announced Dec. 13 that Leroy Lee Hood, founding chair of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology and William Gates III Professor of Biomedical Sciences, is leaving the UW faculty to form a private Institute for Systems Biology.

Richard Palmiter will become acting chair of the UW Department of Biochemistry, effective Feb. 1. He is a professor of biochemistry and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Kenneth Walsh has served as chair of the department since 1992, and was acting chair for two years previously.

Palmiter is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
