Health forum urged improved access
to medical advances

Lee Hood leaving UW to establish private institute
aul G. Ramsey, vice president for medical affairs and dean of
the School of Medicine, announced Dec. 13 that Leroy Lee Hood,
founding chair of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology
and William Gates III Professor of Biomedical Sciences, is
leaving the UW faculty to form a private Institute for Systems
Outpatient Medicine translated into French and Italian
he second edition of Outpatient Medicine, an at-a-glance
resource on more than 200 common clinical conditions, has been
translated into French and Italian. The publisher is W. B.
Saunders, the imprint of Harcourt International.
Palmiter named acting chair
Richard Palmiter will become acting chair of the UW Department
of Biochemistry, effective Feb. 1. He is a professor of
biochemistry and an investigator with the Howard Hughes
Walsh has served as chair of the department since
1992, and was acting chair for two years previously.
Palmiter is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and
the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
