Strong shares achievement award

D. Michael Strong, UW research professor of orthopaedics and surgery and operations director of the Puget Sound Blood Center, has received a lifetime achievement award from America's Blood Centers. Strong shares the award with Sally Cagliotti, vice president of Blood Systems in Arizona, for implementing nucleic acid testing for half the nation's blood supply.

Nucleic acid testing reduces the window of infectivity by as much as 60 days for the hepatitis C virus and 11 days for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It can detect the presence of the viruses before the body has time to produce antibodies against the infection.

Resesarchers study viral shedding rates in genital herpes

UW researchers report in the March 23 New England Journal of Medicine that rates of subclinical shedding of herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 are nearly the same among people who are asymptomatic and those with recognized genital herpes. (Full Story)

ISIS Pharmaceuticals joins UW's Cell Systems Initiative

Isis Pharmaceuticals, a Carlsbad, Calif., company with expertise in genomics and RNA, has joined the UW's Cell Systems Initiative (CSI), a research and educational effort launched by the medical school to advance the understanding of dynamic information systems in cells. (Full Story)

UW faculty honored for resident training studies

Several medical school faculty received abstract awards for presentations made this month in New Orleans at the annual meeting of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics. (Full Story)
