Pellegrini elected to national leadership positions

Carlos Pellegrini, Henry Harkins professor and chair of the Department of Surgery, was recently elected chair of the Residency Review Committee for Surgery. The committee conducts peer reviews, based upon standards and guidelines, of residency programs seeking accreditation.

In addition, Pellegrini has also been elected chair of the board of trustees of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, an organization of approximately 2,200 surgeons, mostly in the United States. He recently completed a one-year term as president of the society.

According to U.S. News & World Report, due to a reported programming error, University of Washington Medical Center should have been ranked higher in the magazine's 2000 annual guide to "America's Best Hospitals," which was available on newsstands on July 17. (Full story)

This summer, approximately 160 minority, disadvantaged or rural high school and college students in Seattle and the WWAMI states are participating in medical school enrichment programs. (Full story)

Abraham Bergman, professor of pediatrics and chief of pediatrics at Harborview Medical Center, will receive the C. Anderson Aldrich Award Oct. 29 in Chicago from the American Academy of Pediatrics for advocacy for children. (Full story)
