First medical school class marks 50th anniversary

A special reunion during Medical Alumni Homecoming Weekend Oct. 6 and 7 marked the 50th anniversary of the graduating class of 1950 the first class to graduate from the UW medical school.

Two alumni were honored during the Homecoming Weekend:

Merle Sande, a 1965 graduate, received the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award. He worked in the early 1980s on a rational, coordinated response to the emerging AIDS epidemic.

Tom Green, who earned his M.D. in 1969 and completed his residency in 1975, both at the UW, received the 2000 Humanitarian Award for his work in Central America, the Caribbean and Russia.

WWAMI Wyoming scientists join in nitric oxide research

Several Wyoming WWAMI faculty for the first-year medical school classes in Laramie will be part of a University of Wyoming interdisciplinary team studying the biological effects of nitric oxide on the human body. (Full story)

Burke authors JAMA editorial on oral contraceptives

Wylie Burke, associate professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and chair of the Department of History and Medical Ethics, authored a Journal of the American Medical Association editorial on weighing the risks and benefits of oral contraceptives. (Full story)

Researcher gives perspectives on brain insulin signaling

The notion that insulin participates in the central nervous system control of food intake and body weight was greeted with skepticism when UW diabetes researchers and their colleagues proposed the idea more than 20 years ago. (Full story)

Rob Muilenburg remembered at services Oct. 11

Robert H. "Rob" Muilenburg was remembered by many this week as a devoted friend and family man and a dedicated leader whose vision and values, encompassing a warm-hearted respect for people, made UW Medical Center one of the best hospitals in America. (Full story)
