A special reunion during Medical Alumni Homecoming Weekend Oct. 6 and 7 marked the 50th anniversary of the graduating class of 1950 the first class to graduate from the UW medical school.

Two alumni were honored during the Homecoming Weekend:

Merle Sande, a 1965 graduate, received the 2000 Distinguished Alumni Award. He worked in the early 1980s on a rational, coordinated response to the emerging AIDS epidemic.

Tom Green, who earned his M.D. in 1969 and completed his residency in 1975, both at the UW, received the 2000 Humanitarian Award for his work in Central America, the Caribbean and Russia.

Several graduates have recounted their memories on the Medical Alumni Association homepage.

Several Wyoming WWAMI faculty for the first-year medical school classes in Laramie will be part of a University of Wyoming interdisciplinary team studying the biological effects of nitric oxide on the human body. (Full story)

Wylie Burke, associate professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and chair of the Department of History and Medical Ethics, authored a Journal of the American Medical Association editorial on weighing the risks and benefits of oral contraceptives. (Full story)

Robert H. "Rob" Muilenburg was remembered by many this week as a devoted friend and family man and a dedicated leader whose vision and values, encompassing a warm-hearted respect for people, made UW Medical Center one of the best hospitals in America. (Full story)
