The Biophysical Society has chosen William N. "Bill" Zagotta, professor of physiology and biophysics, for the 2002 Michael and Kate Barany Award for Young Investigators. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions Zagotta is already making to biophysics early in his research career.
Zagotta earned a Ph.D. degree in neuroscience from Stanford University. He studies the molecular basis for signal transduction in cyclic nucleotide-gated channels.
These channels are involved in electrical signaling for several sensory and physiological processes. Zagotta is particularly interested in opening and closing conformational changes in these channels.
Zagotta will receive the Barany Award Feb. 27 during the Biophysical Society's annual meeting in San Francisco.
