Dear Colleagues,

For the ninth consecutive year, the U.S.News & World Report annual graduate and professional school rankings, released this morning, have ranked the UW School of Medicine No. 1 in primary care. In the U.S. News analysis of National Institutes of Health (NIH) federal funding, the UW School of Medicine ranked first in the nation among public medical schools, and third overall after Harvard Medical School and the University of Pennsylvania, both private medical schools. U.S. News records the UW School of Medicine as receiving $367.7 million in NIH funding in fiscal year 2001. (Full Message)

Genetic variant plus diuretics lowers heart attack risk

UW researchers found that people with hypertension who have the adducin genetic variant (Gly460Trp) were twice as likely to avoid heart attacks and strokes if they took a diuretic medication rather than another type of antihypertensive medication. (Full Story)

Medical Education changes department name

On March 15 the UW Board of Regents approved the name change of the Medical Education department to the Department of Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics. (Full Story)

Resident Match 2002 statistics announced

This year 178 UW medical students sought positions in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), the Advanced Specialty Matches, or the Armed Services Matches. (Full Story)
