Douglas Paauw, professor of medicine, was appointed head of general internal medicine at UW Medical Center on Sept. 1. Richard Deyo, professor of medicine and health services, is the outgoing head of the section.
Paauw is the Rathmann Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Patient-Centered Clinical Education and is the Department of Medicine coordinator for student teaching and clerkships. In July he was voted one of the nations "Best Doctors" in internal medicine. Paauw is one of the editors of the Guide to Internal Medicine published in 1999 and later this year he will be an editor on the Internal Medicine Clerkship Guide (both books by Mosby-Year Book Publishers).
In 2001 Paauw was one of four recipients of the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teaching Award from Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. In 1997 he received the UWs Distinguished Teaching Award and his third teaching award from a graduating class of medical students making him among the univerisitys youngest faculty members designated Teacher Superior in Perpetuity. Paauw received the Margaret S. Anderson Award for exceptional concern for and support of medical students in 1994.
Paauw joined the UW as an attending physician at UW Medical Center and Harborview in 1989. He dedicates the majority of his time to clinical education but is also an HIV researcher.
