Entering class of 2002 begins orientation in Seattle and WWAMI states

The School of Medicine welcomes its 57th entering class of 178 students. A majority of this year’s entering class, 106 students, are Washington State residents. Students from the WWAMI region include 20 from Montana, 19 from Idaho, and 10 each from Alaska and Wyoming. Thirteen students are from outside the region.

Once again women outnumber men in the entering class with 100 women and 78 men. As in past years, the students are a diverse and interesting group and come from many different communities and cultural background including: African American, Asian, Caucasian, Chinese, Filipino, Hispanic, Indian, Korean, Mexican American, Native American, Pakistani, and Vietnamese students. Twelve of the entering students are MD/Ph.D. candidates.

This past week the Seattle-based students attended orientation including a welcome from the dean, tours of the UW, and recreational activities. Similar activities have taken place for students in the other WWAMI states.
