Surgeon Carlos Pellegrini was elected a regent of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) at the groups annual meeting in San Francisco earlier this month. Pellegrini, the Henry N. Harkins professor and chair of surgery, has been an ACS fellow since 1982. He will serve an initial three-year term as regent.
The ACS, with more than 64,000 fellows--including more than 3,700 fellows in other countries and over 5,000 associate fellows, is the largest organization of surgeons in the world. It was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
The 19-member Board of Regents governs the ACS. A geographically balanced and specialty-representative Board of Governors elects regents.
