Bioengineer to receive Korean Ho-Am Award

Yongmin Kim, professor and chair of bioengineering and professor of electrical engineering, has been named the 2003 Laureate of the Ho-Am Prize in Engineering. He is receiving this award for his outstanding achievements in high performance computer architecture and medical imaging.

A developer of technologies for medical imaging and other applications, Kim came to the UW from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1982 as an assistant professor of electrical engineering. Kim founded the UW Image Computing Systems Laboratory, which focuses on hardware and software innovations in multimedia, image processing, computer graphics, medical imaging, and advanced workstation design.

Kim researches medical imaging and computing, Distributed Diagnosis and Home Healthcare (D2H2), multimodality imaging, multimedia systems, computer architecture, and modeling and instrumentation.

The Ho-Am prize honors the late Byung-Chull Lee, also know as Ho-Am, who was founder and chairman of the Samsung Group. Kim will accept the award, which consists of a gold medal, plaque and cash prize, June 3, at the Ho-Am Art Hall in Korea.
