Carlos Pellegrini, professor and chair of surgery and holder of the Henry N. Harkins Endowed Chair in Surgery, has been named to the Board of Directors of the American Board of Surgery.
The American Board of Surgery is an independent, non-profit organization and one of the 24 certifying boards that are members of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
The American Board of Surgery identifies surgeons who have met a certain standard of excellence. The board does this by conducting examinations of acceptable candidates who seek certification or recertification, and by issuing Certificates of Qualification to those who meet the Board's requirements and satisfactorily complete its prescribed examinations. The Board also works to improve and broaden opportunities for the graduate education and training of surgeons.
Harborview Medical Center surgeon-in-chief Ronald Maier, professor of surgery, is vice chair of the American Board of Surgery and will become chair in June 2003.
