UW Medicine faculty and staff will begin using the Online Record of Clinical Activity (ORCA) electronic medical record on Aug. 19. ORCA will be phased in over the next three years.
Phase 1 introduces the PowerChart, Clinical Data Repository, Results Reporting, and Health Information Management (Patient Data Services) applications. These applications will be available at Harborview Medical Center, UW Medical Center, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and all associated clinics.
Thin clients, the small computers for accessing ORCA, will appear in patient-care areas. Wireless networks will gradually be installed as well.
Aug. 19 marks the start of the switch from MINDScape to ORCA to view, edit, and sign transcribed documents. The Clinical Information System and MINDscape will continue for inpatient documentation and for viewing some types of data.
According to Tom Payne, medical director for UW Medicine IT Services, implementation of ORCA is a large endeavor offering many improvements and changes.
More than 100 two-hour sessions to learn ORCA will be offered to faculty, residents, and staff. For information on the training, call 206-598-7372 or visit the ORCA Web site.
