California businessman gives $10 million to FHCRC

The chief executive officer of a California computer company has given $10 million to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for research into early diagnosis and prevention of cancer.

Don Listwin, CEO of Openwave Systems, Inc. and head of the Listwin Family Foundation, announced the gift at the FHCRC’s 28th Annual Hutch Holiday Gala, Saturday, Dec. 6. The funds are earmarked for the center’s Early Detection and Intervention Initiative, which researchers hope will result in new methods and technologies for early detection, as well as improved intervention strategies to prevent cancer in high-risk patients.

The gift is the largest single donation in the center’s history. In making the announcement, Listwin challenged other gala attendees to raise an additional $2 million for cancer research. Guests responded by pledging $3.5 million in donations.

Openwave Systems, based in Redwood City, Calif., provides software for cellular phones connecting to the Internet.
