Irl Hirsch, the Diabetes Treatment and Teaching Endowed Professor and professor of medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition, will be recognized this summer by the American Diabetes Association for his clinical care in diabetes.
Hirsch has been named Outstanding Physician Clinician in Diabetes Care by the association, and will receive the award at its annual scientific meeting in June. The award recognizes outstanding clinical work and teaching in diabetes care, and is often given to a senior physician as a career achievement award.
Hirsch, 46, is an attending physician and the medical director of the Diabetes Care Center at UWMC. He has been a national leader in improving clinical diabetes management, especially in Type I diabetes.
In addition to his teaching and clinical work, Hirsch has also served as editor-in-chief of the journal Clinical Diabetes, and has written and edited books on diabetes care and management. Hirsch came to the UW as an assistant professor in 1990, following training in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami Beach, Fla., and a fellowship in metabolism and endocrinology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
