Mitchell recognized by American Urological Association
Michael Mitchell, professor of urology in the UW School of Medicine and chief of pediatric urology at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, has received one of the highest awards in the field of urology.
The American Urological Association (AUA) this month awarded Mitchell the 2004 Hugh Hampton Young Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the study of genitourinary tract disease. The award includes an honorarium from Karl Storz Endoscopy America.
One of the world's leading pediatric urologists, Mitchell has led breakthroughs in treating urologic malformations in children. He pioneered a surgical treatment for bladder exstrophy, a birth defect in which a child is born with the bladder on the outside. He researches bladder reconstruction and replacement.
Mitchell received his undergraduate degree at Princeton University and his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed his medical training at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston Children's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the National Institute of Child Health and Development. Mitchell has also worked at Harvard Medical School, the Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children, and the University of Indiana medical school. He has been chief of pediatric urology at Children's Hospital in Seattle and a UW School of Medicine faculty member since 1989.
