The School of Medicine has announced the graduating class award results and the keynote speaker for the 2004 Hooding Ceremony. The event will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 5, in Bank of America Arena at Edmundson Pavilion on the UW campus.
Medical student Elizabeth Hutchinson has been selected by her classmates to receive the Ellen Griep Award, which recognizes a student who has provided inspiration to her peers, faculty, and the staff by managing both the demands of medical school and continued excellence in her other endeavors.
Michael J. Ryan, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Nephrology, will give the keynote address at the Hooding Ceremony. Ryan was selected by students for the Distinguished Teacher Award for basic science instruction. Roy Colven, associate professor of medicine, and Terry Mengert, professor of medicine, were also selected for the Distinguished Teacher Award in clinical science. Mengert is also receiving the Margaret S. Anderson Award, which honors a staff or faculty member who has shown exceptional concern for and support of medical students.
Students selected Paul Crosby, clinical associate professor of medicine and an obstetrician/gynecologist at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, for the WWAMI Distinguished Teacher Award. The award recognizes a WWAMI faculty member who has had a significant impact on medical education, even if that faculty member may teach only a few students each year.
