Online News intern Ryan Lyse wins award for feature writing

Ryan Lyse, journalism intern for Health Sciences/UW Medicine News and Community Relations, won an award for Outstanding Magazine Journalism at the UW Department of Communication's second annual Undergraduate Excellence in Communications Awards ceremony held on June 3. Lyse writes for the School of Medicine Online News and the UW Medicine Dean's Report, in addition to working as a photographer and graphic designer for News and Community Relations.

The Department of Communication award was sponsored by Pioneer Newspapers and came with a check for $150. Other Pioneer-sponsored award categories included Opinion Writing, Legislative Reporting, Community Journalism, and Digital Journalism.

The award was based on four feature articles Lyse wrote for a magazine journalism class. Visiting professor Brenda Bell nominated Lyse for the award. Lyse's favorite type of writing is feature writing because there is a lot of room for creativity, and it gives him the opportunity to conduct candid, one-on-one interviews with his subjects.

Lyse recently graduated from the UW with a Bachelor's Degree in journalism, and in the future he hopes to write feature articles for a major newspaper or do freelance writing for various publications. Lyse may be reached at 206-616-2350, rlyse@u.washington.edu
