Blood drive honors Lipski
UW medical students have organized a bone marrow registration and blood donation drive to honor classmate Greg Lipski. Diagnosed with leukemia this spring, Lipski, 37, would like to increase the number of minority participants in the National Marrow Donor Program. He is scheduled for a July 6 marrow transplant from his sister.
The blood drive and marrow registration will be held in the Health Sciences Lobby from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, May 20, with a break from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Since learning of his diagnosis, classmates have held a 5-kilometer fundraising run, Greg's Gallup, and have brought him meals and videotaped class lectures. Greg's Gallup raised more than $10,000. Lipski has stayed in medical school and is finishing his second year of courses at the end of May.
Lipski worked from 1996 to 2003 in the UW Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, where he did research, taught undergraduate courses, and supported testing at the UW's Kirsten Wind Tunnel.
