W. Robb MacLellan is new Cardiology Division Head

W. Robb MacLellan, M.D., is the Robert A. Bruce Professor of Medicine and head of the Division of Cardiology as of November 1. Dr. MacLellan comes to the Department from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was the Maud Cady Guthman Chair in Cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine.

John Olerud honored by WSU

John E. Olerud, M.D., professor of medicine and head of the Division of Dermatology, is the 2011 recipient of the Regents Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest honor Washington State University bestows on its alumni. Dr. Olerud, who holds the George F. Odland Endowed Chair in Dermatology, is a graduate of WSU and of the UW School of Medicine where he completed medicine residency and a dermatology fellowship.

New grants for genomic medicine

Department of Medicine faculty members are involved in new initiatives by the National Institutes of Health to advance the application of genomic knowledge to clinical medicine. Gail Jarvik, M.D., Ph.D., leads a Clinical Sequencing Exploratory Research Project, funded at $2.3 million per year for 4 years. She and colleagues will investigate new approaches to care of patients with colon cancer. Read more >


Bill Parks appointed to endowed chair

William C. Parks, Ph.D., professor in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, was appointed to the Endowed Chair in Pulmonary Disease Research. Dr. Parks is director of the UW Center for Lung Biology, co-director of the Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology Training Track, a member of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, and an affiliate investigator at the Benaroya Research Institute. His appointment will be celebrated by the Department on February 27.


Paul Nghiem appointed to endowed chair

Paul Nghiem, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor in Dermatology, was appointed to the Michael W. Piepkorn Endowed Chair in Dermatology. Dr. Nghiem is director of the Skin Oncology Clinical Program at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. The Piepkorn Chair was established in 2007 by Dr. Piepkorn, a clinical professor in the division and a graduate of the UW Dermatology Residency Program. Dr. Nghiem's appointment will be celebrated by the Department on March 29.

Research by Connie Celum, M.D., M.P.H, and Jared Baeten, M.D., Ph.D., of the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is included in TIME’s new book 100 New Scientific Discoveries: Fascinating, Unbelievable and Mind Expanding Stories. Their work is featured in the Seattle Weekly of December 7.

WWAMI 40th Anniversary

The WWAMI Program of regional medical education is celebrating the anniversary of its founding in 1971. The Alaska program, the first WWAMI site, marked the occasion with a celebration in September, and others are planned throughout the region in the winter and spring of 2012.

UWMC in hospital ratings

The UW Medical Center was ranked 13th in the nation among 4,825 hospitals in the U.S. News & World Report 2011-12 guide to “Best Hospitals.”  Read more >
