Funding

Each year, the Department of Medicine receives high levels of funding from many sources, both public and private. In fiscal year 2005, the Department ranked fourth among all U.S. departments of medicine in number of awards and fifth in total amount of awards—over $121 million—from the National Institutes of Health. But NIH funds cover only part of the need. Support for research also comes from other government units, academic societies, industry, patient-support organizations, foundations, and individuals.
