To honor the extraordinary courage and selflessness of our UW Alumni who have earned this nation’s highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor, the University is erecting a monument at the end of Memorial Way.  Made possible through generous private contributions, the UW Medal of Honor Memorial will create a safe, contemplative, and ceremonial space in the heart of our campus. The Memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day - November 11, 2009 with a parade and ceremonies starting at 10:00am.

medal of honorThe Medal of Honor is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon service members, and is presented by the President in the name of the Congress. Individuals who wear it call themselves “recipients” (not winners) The medal is presented only to the bravest of the brave, and so far, only five have been presented for service in Iraq and Afganistan.

To date, 3,465 Medals of Honor have been awarded, covering all branches of the United States military.

There is a comprehensive web portal to the recipients, recommendation process and history of the Medal of Honor at Army.mil Features
