CAMPUS Mentor Programs
Autumn quarter “Mentor Power for Success” protégés and student mentors have the option to transition into one of the four OMA&D-funded Community Academic Mentorship Programs for Underrepresented Students “CAMPUS” Mentor programs (PIPE, Adelante!, Yehawali, Ubuntu) for winter and spring quarters.
The Pacific Islander Partnerships in Education (PIPE) mentorship program was conceived by students and faculty in 2001 as a response to low retention and high drop out rates of Pacific Islander American students at U.W. It was proposed with the belief that succeeding in the university means having a meaningful experience in the university, and that this meaningful experience can be pursued within collectivities.
Now, PIPE has expanded to three similar programs: Adelante!, Yehawali, and Ubuntu. All of these programs practice mentorship as a partnership in that students do not necessarily form relationships of unequal status. Rather, students pursue and maintain relationships with each other that foster mentoring between two or more individuals and mentoring within a collective.
These intensive mentorship partnerships build on and sustain relationships of care, support, trust, and cultural integrity – the practice of forging relationships in collectivities that retain practices of one’s culture as critical parts of attaining a meaningful education. All of these programs are open to all students.
- Individual and collective mentoring sessions at least once a week for both. This may include studying, counseling, eating, engaging in any social and/or education activity (e.g., museum visit, walking in the park, watching a cultural presentation).
- Study tables once a week – collective studying usually at the ECC for about two to four hours, with food.
- Mentorship training sessions – at least once a quarter.
- Meeting with faculty director – at least twice a quarter.
- Collective meetings of each of the programs and, sometimes, a combination of programs (includes special activities like kick-off event in the fall and “graduation” in the spring, and a retreat sometime during the school year.)
- Distribute scholarship awards at the end of the year.
