K-12 Scholarships

Each year, Washington MESA provides scholarship resources to students that have been recognized by their communities as future leaders in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In partnership with Boeing and Weyerhaeuser, scholarship funds are provided to persisting Washington State MESA students to ensure that students have the opportunities to attend college, obtain STEM degrees, and pursue careers in STEM based fields.

Boeing Scholarship $2,000 – 12th Grade Washington State students
The Boeing SENSE for leadership in Mathematics, Engineering, or Science provide financial awards to outstanding MESA student leaders enrolling as full-time students in math, engineering, or science field. To be considered students must meet all of the following criteria:

To be considered eligible, MESA students must:
• A current Washington MESA Student
• be in 12th grade
• plan to take the SAT during your senior year and apply to at least 2 community colleges or 4-year universities
• remain within a MESA School District and remain active in MESA during both junior and senior years.
• take math, science, and English all 4 years.

Weyerhaeuser ($2,500) – 12th Grade Washington State Students that will enroll at the University of Washington – Seattle Campus
The purpose of this endowment is to provide assistance to undergraduate students who have participated in the MESA program. The scholarship shall be awarded to entering freshmen or entering transfer students to the University of Washington and may be renewable for up to three additional years of undergraduate study. Failure of the student to remain in good academic standing or to make satisfactory progress toward a degree may result in withdrawal of the scholarship.

To be considered eligible, MESA students must:
• A current Washington MESA Student
• be a high school senior who will be enrolled at the University of Washington as a full-time college student during the 2014-15 academic year in math, science, or engineering studies.
• take math, science, and English all 4 years

Meeting minimal eligibility requirements does not guarantee scholarship approval. This year’s scholarship application will be available here on Monday January 6th and the deadline to complete an application is May 5, 2014.

Student Checklist 

In order to be considered you must meet all the eligibility requirements for the scholarship that you are applying for and  submit the following materials by the application deadline.

  1. A completed scholarship application.
  2. At least one and not more than two recommendations. The first recommendation form must be from your MESA teacher or staff member familiar with your academic work. The additional form can be from a teacher, staff or community member.
  3. Include an official high school transcript.

Review Selection 

Scholarship recipients will be evaluated and selected on the basis of academic performance, leadership, program involvement, statement of purpose, and recommendations. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Notification

Your MESA Director will notify all Boeing applicants before the end of the year celebrations for each center (typically in May), and the scholarship will be issued upon high school graduation and college enrollment. Weyerhaeuser applicants will be notified by WA MESA in May. Students may attend a community college or 4 year university to receive the scholarship. Students will be recognized at their respective MESA graduation/scholarship ceremonies.

Award Distribution

Distribution of all awards will be contingent upon the scholar’s ability to sustain or exceed the defined award qualifications and continue to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress towards high school. Students that do not claim their scholarships within 1 year after high school graduation may lose their scholarship.

Complete recommendations must be postmarked by May 5, 2014.
