CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research focuses on the pathogenesis and treatment of type 1 diabetes. Specific interests include: 1) the role of autoantibodies in the disease process of type 1 diabetes, and the significance of particular antibody specificities in better defining clinical phenotype and disease outcome; 2) the role of genetic vs. environmental factors in the disease pathogenesis of children who present with mixed features of type 1 and type 2 diabetes; 3) mechanisms resulting in loss of the counterregulatory glucagon response to hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes subjects, hypothesized to be autoimmune in etiology; and 4) relationship between oxidative stress and glycemic variability in type 1 diabetes patients.
