Our faculty physicians provide comprehensive clinical care in all aspects of outpatient and inpatient metabolism and endocrinology. Inpatient consult services are provided at three sites: the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC) and the Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System (VA). A general endocrine clinic is provided at UWMC-Roosevelt, HMC and the VA. The HMC clinic also serves patients referred from community primary care providers.
The clinics at each site serve patients with diagnostic or management problems in one or more of these categories: diabetes mellitus; lipid metabolism; diseases of the thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands; diseases of calcium and mineral balance, including osteoporosis; disorders of male and female reproductive endocrinology; and other conditions such as hypoglycemia, disorders of osmolality, carcinoid, and porphyria.
Diabetes Care Center
The Diabetes Care Center, part of UWMC, is staffed by caring, motivated, and highly trained physicians, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, and pharmacists, working together to provide comprehensive diabetes care, education, nutritional advice, and support in a friendly atmosphere. The center specializes in care for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and complex issues, including those on insulin pumps and those who have undergone organ transplant.
Lipid/Nutrition/Metabolic Bone Disease Clinic
The clinic, part of HMC, provides comprehensive preventive care to dyslipidemic patients at risk for premature coronary artery disease by addressing their lipid disorders, hypertension, diabetes, and other risk factors. Patients with specific nutritional or metabolic and bone disorders are also seen, as well as those on home nutrition support and those with nutritional disturbances and malnutrition. A registered dietitian with special expertise in cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism provides patient education.
Weight Regulation Diagnostic & Evaluation Center
This center, located at HMC, provides evaluation, diagnosis, management suggestions, and education for patients of all ages with disorders of weight regulation, including those with diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease complicated by excessive weight gain and obesity.
