The Evans School at the University of Washington is ranked
as the top school of public policy and public affairs in the northwest. Our
graduates serve as mayors, elected officials, public agency directors, policy
and budget analysts, community organizers, policy advocates for environmental
and social policy issues, media and press relations specialists, researchers,
and nonprofit leaders and managers. Although each member of our community
works to accomplish different specific objectives, what we share is a dedication
to make the world a better place. It is important to take a moment and reflect
on our mission:
We are committed to improving the quality of public
and nonprofit service. We strive to educate leaders to meet community challenges
with compassion, vision, analytic rigor, and practicality. We pursue research
and ideas that work to strengthen sound public policy and management. We
are dedicated to serve the community and promote thoughtful, civil, public
deliberation. We value integrity, respect, and excellence in our own institution,
in our graduates, and in the community.

Students at the Evans School join a vital community of skilled professionals.
The faculty, administration, visiting practitioners, and student body have
been selected for their commitment to excellence and their demonstrated abilities
to think and perform. The school is home to nationally recognized policy
research centers and initiatives. This community works together to build
each persons capacity for excellence and to learn from one another
how to approach public policy in a more rational, efficient, and equitable
manner.
In a time when the responsibilities of the public, nonprofit,
and private sectors no longer have distinct boundaries, our society demands
innovative thinkers and highly skilled communicators to achieve successful
community and corporate collaborations. Our school charges its students to
become those leaders. Students must be proactive in their education and seek
the knowledge and experience offered by the faculty and the vast resources
of this University.
The school is driven by a commitment to serve the common
good, but we measure ourselves by our ability to find real solutions to real
problems. The challenges facing public, nonprofit, and private sector leaders
are complex. Across the nation and throughout the world, the scope of public
life is being redefined by changes in the economy, the environment, social
welfare, population, technology, and family structure.
The most inspiring leaders in our society demonstrate two
qualities: the ability to hold the vision and optimism that we can make our
homes, our communities, and the environment a better place; and the ability
to communicate that vision to the public and affect real change in attitudes
and institutions. The Evans School of Public Affairs is proud of all of its
graduates and faculty who have become those leaders.
