I saw the UW Executive MHA Program as an opportunity to build my knowledge about health system organization and leadership. Having spent 20 years working on these issues, the Program has provided me with a chance to organize my current knowledge and to build on that knowledge in an organized fashion. I value being challenged by an extremely knowledgeable faculty and working with a diverse group of health professionals with a similar passion about making a difference for our communities.
How would you describe your educational background?
I am a family physician with an undergraduate degree in economics. Lifelong learning is very important to my enjoyment and enrichment.
What is your professional background?
I am an academic family physician at Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) with twenty years of experience educating students and residents. My primary role is managing our department's health system, which includes four clinics with 121,000 visits a year and inpatient care of 2,200 patients a year. I am also responsible for representing our needs to our OHSU hospital system, and integrating educational programs into our clinical enterprise.
Are there any outstanding or unique experiences that you would like to share with regard to the UW Executive MHA Program?
The key to the UW Executive MHA Program is the interaction between classmates and faculty. The focus is on our learning, and innovative methods are used to try to engender our individual learning as well as engage us in group learning.
What do you feel are the strengths of the UW Executive MHA Program?
You can immediately apply what you are learning to your day to day work. The Program makes you think differently about issues you face on the job and respond to them differently. The expertise of the faculty facilitate this process.
What are your career goals, and how do you feel the UW Executive MHA Program is assisting you in reaching those goals?
I aspire to improve the health of the community; to revolutionize family medicine as a discipline; to evolve our department into a role model of success; and to facilitate the personal achievement of each individual within our organization. The UW Executive MHA Program is providing me with a set of tools that will make this more achievable.
Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences here?
The issue of safety and quality in health care is a focus that is recurring in the Program. This is an issue that I have a great interest in, including the need to develop a program that will move our clinical enterprise forward. The course work has helped me build the political support, organizational structure, and reporting system needed to provide the foundation for a quality assurance program that will provide feedback to our clinical leaders, and ultimately improve the care our patients receive.
