Dr. Cynthia Rasch: Executive MHA Candidate, 2008

What brought you to the Executive MHA Program?
I first learned about the program while in the UW Certificate Program in Medical Management. I wanted to gain the skills necessary to succeed in my employment as a hospital medical director. I enjoyed the topics of leadership, quality, and strategic management, and learning about the aspects of medicine that seem foreign to most doctors. I was inspired by the excellent teaching and my desire to have an impact on the organizations that I work for.

How would you describe your educational background?
I received my MD degree from the UW School of Medicine in 1991. I completed my training in Internal Medicine at the Kaiser Foundation Hospital in San Francisco, CA. This prepared me to practice as an American Board of Internal Medicine certified physician.

What is your professional background?

I am currently employed by Providence as a practicing physician and the director of a hospitalist program. I enjoy patient care, but also the challenges of management. I have worked in private practice and as a hospital employee in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Are there any outstanding or unique experiences that you would like to share with regard to the Executive MHA Program?
The Executive MHA program has given me a place to try new skills and build the confidence to apply things that I am learning in my work. It is unique to have such a talented group of professionals as fellow students. I have learned from every experience and appreciate the group learning. I was the CEO in a simulation for one of our classes. It was a great experience to be challenged by real life examples and think about what that role would be like in a real organization.

What do you feel are the strengths of the Executive MHA Program?
As I started the program, I felt that my biggest personal challenge would be learning about finance. I was surprised at how excellent the teaching was and how much I learned. We built upon information from each chapter and practiced with real examples. I am much less apprehensive about trying to understand financial ratios and real life challenges such as creditworthiness. The recommended readings and texts have been excellent.

What are your career goals?
I want to continue to take on more responsibility in my organization and organized medicine. I have an interest in leadership and improving health care. As I gain more experience, I would welcome the challenge of being the CEO of a hospital.
