Charlie Aleshire: Executive MHA, 2010

Charlie Aleshire: Executive MHA, 2010

What brought you to the UW Executive MHA Program?
I had already completed a business degree and wanted to learn more about the administrator's role specific to health care. I investigated my opportunities locally and found that the UW Executive MHA Program was among the top four in the nation. Given the fact that the curriculum was exactly what I was looking for, the Program was located in my own backyard, and the format was compatible with working full time, the decision was easy.

How would you describe your educational background?
My first degree was an ADN from Shoreline Community College. I am an RN by training, and found myself in a management role without people management or financial management skills. For this reason, I sought a business management degree which subsequently inspired me to continue my learning journey with the UW Executive MHA Program.

What is your professional background?
I am an RN with seven years of experience in pediatric and adult ICU care, 14 years as a flight nurse with Airlift Northwest, and four years as Clinical Director for Emergency Services at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma, Washington.

Are there any outstanding or unique experiences that you would like to share with regard to the UW Executive MHA Program?
The most unique experiences have been the introduction to my cohort group starting with the ropes course orientation on Whidbey Island. Then, getting to know 27 amazingly talented and brilliant individuals, each of whom came to the Program with an incredible body of knowledge and a wide variety of experiences to share.

What do you feel are the strengths of the UW Executive MHA Program?
The cohort group is intentionally varied so that there are representatives of multiple disciplines. This diversity adds to the learning experience. The Program Director is rather direct about the need to see health care in terms of a global service; it is not just about doctors and nurses. I also appreciate the Program's emphasis on developing leadership skills.

What are your career goals?

I would like to find myself in a position to influence administrative decision making about the delivery of health care for children.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experiences in the UW Executive MHA Program?
I have never enjoyed learning as much as I have in this program. The learning environment is one of support. The professors have a sincere interest in each student's success.
