Graduate Certificate Program
in Health Management (CHM)

Overview:

The Graduate Certificate in Health Management program serves students with an interest in additional academic training in management and leadership aspects of health care and public health organizations and systems. Most Master of Public Health (MPH) graduates find that development of basic management skills and competencies is essential for progressing in operational and managerial roles within health care and public health programs, organizations, and systems. Graduates will obtain basic core competencies around management, personal leadership, and health care financial management.

Certificate students must be enrolled in a UW graduate degree program with priority given to students in the Department of Health Services and the Department of Global Health. Students from other departments and schools will be considered on a space-available basis.

Special Note for Department of Health Services Students:
Since core requirements of a degree program can not be counted toward a graduate certificate:
  • Master of Health Administration (MHA) students will not be eligible for the certificate.
  • Master of Public Health (MPH) students may use HSMGMT 510 instead of HSMGMT 560 to satisfy the management course requirement for the HSERV MPH degree, but will then need to add an elective course to satisfy the credit requirement for the certificate. see details . . .

Course Requirements:

The certificate curriculum consists of four required courses and the Capstone Integrative Seminar.

HSMGMT 505,   Managing Health Care Organizations  (4 credits)

HSMGMT 507,   Group Dynamics and Team Leadership  (4 credits)
(2-quarter course, extends through Autumn and Winter quarters)

HSMGMT 510,   Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management  (4 credits)
(special instructions for HSERV MPH students see details . . .)

HSMGMT 574,   Financial Management I  (4 credits)
(offered through the Executive MHA program)

HSMGMT 545,   Capstone Integrative Seminar  (2-4 credits)
