Competency Basis of the UW MHA
Our leadership development sequence, and all other coursework, is linked to a competency development framework. The transformational leadership sequence is based on the work by Bruce Avolio, PhD, the Director of the Center for Leadership and Strategic Thinking at the Foster School of Business. The program consists of:
- Standardized assessments provided by the CLST staff measuring performance on standardized-leadership and team-development measures
- Individualized feedback and coaching to facilitate understanding of the assessments
- Academic courses which are integrated to expand and extend the information provided in the assessments
- Experiential feedback (ropes course and summer internship) with structured feedback on leadership performance
Together, the CLST assessments, coaching, and associated academic coursework, provide an integrated leadership development framework that occurs simultaneously with competency development in 26 identified competencies we have tracked and evaluated since we served as an original demonstration site of the National Center for Healthcare Leadership competency model.
