Concurrent MHA/MD Degree Program

Nimish Muni, MD, MHA 2007
Modern health care is an incredibly complex industry. My training via the concurrent MHA/MD degree program at the University of Washington has prepared me to manage these complexities successfully. While the MD prepared me for the intricacies of individual patient care, the MHA places those intricacies in the appropriate context. The MHA faculty are forward thinking and collegial, and they are dedicated to their students. The program focuses on the development of health care leaders by facilitating active thought and discussion. My training as an MD with an MHA allows me to bridge the gaps between patient, population, and industrial level management.

The MHA/MD provides medical students with a unique opportunity to develop or enhance their skills in the areas of management, leadership, and policy. Concurrent degree graduates can expect to use their degrees to broaden their perspectives as practicing clinicians or to take on new roles, such as manager of a clinical department within a health care organization, medical director of a public program (e.g., Medicaid), policy advisor to a clinical or professional organization, or consultant.

Students who are currently enrolled in medical school, as well as prospective students intending to apply, are encouraged to contact the MHA Program Office. A prior bachelor's degree is required for application. Additional information about the admission (application) process, as well as contact information, is below.

The concurrent program takes five years to complete, at which time students receive both a MD and a MHA degree. Faculty and staff of both programs are actively involved in advising and mentoring concurrent students.

Admission

The Graduate School does not allow the MHA Program to defer MHA admission for MD concurrent students for more than one year. Therefore, MD students must apply for the MHA degree in the year of or prior to their intended year of first enrollment in MHA coursework. Because most MD students enter the MHA curriculum in the year following their third or fourth year of medical school, beginning in summer quarter, application is likely to be requested in the fall of their second or third year.

Although the MHA and MD admission processes and decisions are coordinated separately, the programs share the same application deadline of December 1 for concurrent MHA/MD applicants.
