Concurrent MHA/MPA Degree Program

John Rigg, MHA, MPA 2006
Although my first career as a paramedic working for a large public hospital was satisfying, I eventually became extremely cognizant of my professional limits as a manager, and increasingly frustrated with the state of health care. Enrolling in the UW concurrent MHA/MPA degree program was one of the best and most transforming decisions of my life. The program gave me a more holistic and deeper understanding of the health care delivery system and its role within society, public policy, and polity. It also prepared me for the Winston Health Policy Fellowship, which was a perfect match for my interest and skills, and launched my career into an extremely exciting and satisfying trajectory.

This concurrent degree program serves students who are interested in pursuing careers in the health care industry that focus specifically on management and policy issues relating to public and non-profit organizations. Students take courses in both the Department of Health Services and in the Evans School of Public Affairs. Faculty from both programs are actively involved in the advising and mentoring of concurrent students. The concurrent program typically takes three years to complete, at which time the student receives both the MHA and MPA degrees. The MPA and MHA programs both require a final project in lieu of a thesis.
