MHA Skills & Competencies
Over the next decade, we anticipate an increasing need for health care managers who can accommodate continuous technological and organizational change within complex social and economic settings. They must have strong skills in:
- conceptualization, integration, and synthesis
- planning and implementation
- organizational and group management
- process and project management
- decision management
The program's curriculum is structured to meet these needs. In terms of general skills and competencies, students learn to:
- Assess health status and risk factors in populations, communities, and markets.
- Lead effectively within cultural, community, and market contexts.
- Perform economic and strategic analysis, applying demand-side, supply-side, and market organization concepts to clinical programs and enterprises.
- Develop and allocate resources to achieve market objectives and community health improvement goals.
- Implement management strategies to support delivery of safe, effective, and efficient clinical services.
- Conduct program evaluation, including continuous improvement of the effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and safety of clinical processes, organizational systems, and strategic policies.
- Communicate appropriately to a range of audiences, with an understanding of information technology and management strategies.
- Maintain a committed, motivated, empowered, and well-trained workforce.
- Mobilize the health policy environment to help shape policies that support organizational objectives.
- Recognize the impact of health care institutions on communities they serve.
- Support and strengthen organizational governance processes.
- Model a systemic perspective and effective management behavior that emphasizes:
- managing interpersonal dynamics
- leading multidisciplinary teams
- interacting with clinical professionals
- measuring and managing personal and organizational performance
- maintaining and sustaining high levels of accountability
- sustaining relationships and partnerships within the community
Students also develop a set of practical skills, including:
- personal and group communication, both written and oral
- project and business unit management, planning, and development
- decision analysis and support
- program evaluation and process management
