IRB review is a fundamental process in the protection of human subjects in research. Yet human subjects review is often portrayed as frustrating and cumbersome and IRB comments viewed as mystifying or incomprehensible. In this presentation, the panel will examine the perceived mismatch between the IRB process and the goals of ethically responsible research. They will discuss the challenges of human subjects review from the perspectives of both reviewer and researcher and will explore how communication and a common language can help bridge the gap.
