HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

In 1946, the Department of Microbiology was incorporated into the Health Science complex as part of the School of Medicine. The primary role of the department is that of a basic biological science department in microbiology. The Department serves the University and State by providing a teaching and research center for microbiology. For undergraduates the department offers a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology, and co-sponsors with Laboratory Medicine, a double degree program in Microbiology and Medical Technology (see double degree program described herein). The number of students majoring in microbiology has increased from a few students in 1950, to the present enrollment of approximately 110 students. In 1960-61, 7 students graduated with a degree in microbiology. In contrast, 70 students graduated with a microbiology degree during the 2011-2012 academic year. In addition to the undergraduate program, there are normally 35 students enrolled in the graduate program seeking a Ph.D. degree in microbiology.
