DESCRIPTION: As Teaching Assistant Nick supported an undergraduate
course in emergency management and during the summer quarter worked with
COPECO (the Honduras version of FEMA) and assisting several municipalities
reduce risks from flooding and landslides
STUDENTS: Heidi A Kandathil (project lead) , Rebecca Spinks, Peter
Drakos, Aubin Phillips and Glenn Coil are graduate students within the
Department of Urban Design and Planning

DESCRIPTION: These students make up the project team responsible
for writing the Hazard Identification and Vulnerability Analysis (HIVA)

STUDENT: Glenn Coil is a graduate student within the Department

DESCRIPTION: Mr. Coil is developing a Hazard Identification and
Vulnerability Analysis (HIVA) for Whitman County.

DESCRIPTION: These students developed a hazards mitigation plan
for the City of Everett Washington. will meet or exceed the Disaster Mitigation
Act of 2000 (DMA2K) requirements.
STUDENTS: Rebecca Spinks, MUP graduate currently with the Bellingham
Department of Trasnportation and Heidi Kandathil graduate student within
the Department of Urban Design and Planning.
SPONSORING AGENCY: Shoreline,Washington
DESCRIPTION: Ms. Spinks developed a hazards mitigation plan for
the City of Shoreline, Washington that exceeded the Disaster Mitigation
Act of 2000 (DMA2K) requirements.
STUDENTS: Heidi A Kandathil, and Glenn Coil are graduate students
within the Department of Urban Design and Planning. Lorelei Juntunen was
project coordinator and graduated from the University of Oregon in 2004.
SPONSORING AGENCY: Clark County, Washington
DESCRIPTION: These students make up the project team tasked with
developing a hazards mitigation plan for Clark County that will meet or
exceed the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA2K) requirements for a
multi-jurisdiction plan.
STUDENT: Ingrid Lundin graduate student, Urban Design and Planning
SPONSORING AGENCY: City of Snoqualmie, Washington
DESCRIPTION: Ingrid Lundin was the Teaching Assistant of a "Studio"
Course leading the development of the Kimble Creek planning document.
STUDENT: Sarah Hawkins, graduate student, Urban Design and Planning,
helped write element of what became a DMA 2000 compliant Hazard Mitigation
Plan for the City. Sarah Hawkins is currently employed by the FEMA/DHS.
SPONSORING AGENCY: City of Redmond Washington
DESCRIPTION: Ms. Hawkins was the Teaching Assistant to a course
that lead to the development of a Hazards Mitigation planning document
for the City of Redmond.
STUDENT: Andy Bohlander, Graduate, School of Marine Affairs.
Mr Bohlander is currently employed by the Washington Emergency Management
Division.
SPONSORING AGENCY: Federal Emergency Management Agency
DESCRIPTION: Andy Bohlander has been contracted by FEMA to
produce 3 separate hazards mitigation planning documents: (1) an annotated
bibliography of hazard mitigation planning resources, (2) hazard mitigation
plan 'cliff notes', and (3) a fictitious multi-hazard mitigation plan
for a Washington community (e.g., Hazardville, WA).
STUDENT: Elenka Jarolimek, Graduate, Urban Design and Planning
SPONSORING AGENCY: Federal Emergency Management Agency
DESCRIPTION: Elenka Jarolimek is an intern with FEMA under
the direction of Sharon Loper. Jarolimek will be polling risk prone
communities and determining whether or not they have current hazards mitigation
plan. She along with Bohlander will be developing corrective strategies.

STUDENT: Patty Julio, Graduate, Urban Design and Planning
SPONSORING AGENCY: Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup (CREW)
DESCRIPTION: The internship supports the work of CREW and
the Seattle Business Disaster Mitigation Program. Primary responsibilities
will be to guide the development of materials for CREW and the Seattle
Disaster Mitigation Program (BDM), provide staff support to the Business
Disaster and Mitigation Program Steering Committee, conduct research on
Seattle’s business sector, develop information packets, locate funding
sources and deliver a write-up that will provide a snapshot of Seattle’s
Business Assistance Sector.
