Rights and permissions

Both the Editor of MLQ and Duke University Press understand first-hand the importance of intellectual property for scholars. The contract that authors sign with MLQ/Duke gives the widest breadth possible. That is, authors have full authority to reprint any essay in the author's own work without a republication fee.
The following paragraph from the contract, signed after a work has been accepted, details this provision:
The University of Washington, as assignee, grants to the Author unrestricted right to use his or her article for non-commercial purposes, including, but not limited to, the right to make and distribute copies in the course of teaching and research; the right to post the article on personal or institutional Web sites and in other open-access repositories; the right to quote from the article in any book or article that he or she may later write; the right to photocopy the article for his or her own use, including use in his or her own classes; and the right to republish the article in any book he or she may write or edit after the journal has appeared. In case of republication, notice of previous publication in Modern Language Quarterly must be given.

The press charges a fee if the essay is reprinted in someone else's collection. If you have any question about reprinting, including specific costs, contact the permissions representative at Duke University Press.

That contact and further information on permission is available on the Duke UP permissions page.
