Body Composition (fat / lean body mass) - minimum 5 mice per test Measurement of body composition:We have developed a technique to measure body composition in vivo using quantitative magnetic resonance (QMR) methods (Echo Medical Systems, Houston, TX). A conscious rodent is placed in a sample holder and the sample holder is then inserted into the center of the magnetic resonance machine. Single measurement takes 2 minutes. For a typical experiment, each animal undergoes 3- to 5-replicate measurements. The measurement procedure itself causes no harm to the animal. Respiration rates, food intake and body weight will be closely monitored during and after the measurement. To our knowledge, animals appear to tolerate the procedure very well and recover within a day. Because the machine has an internal shielding devise, no shielding to the nearby area is necessary as a safety measure for both animals and the operator.
