Body Temperature monitoring:
We use VitalView system (Mini Mitter Co, Inc., Bend, OR) for the continuous, computerized determination of core body temperature.  Small implantable transponders are powered by capturing energy from electrical fields generated by the receiver, which resides under the metabolic chamber where each animal is housed during metabolic experiments.  They operate without batteries and remain implanted indefinitely to monitor the animal’s temperature.  There will be no apparent pain to the animals during the data acquisition period.  All receivers and sensors connect to a computer with the VitalView software that manages system operation, data collection and data analysis.

Implantation of temperature transducers (Mini-mitter) in  mice:
Temperature transponders (Mini Mitter Co) will be sterilized overnight using cidexplus ® solution and rinsed with sterile saline just prior to implantation.  Transducers are implanted intraperitoneally (ip) following already approved methods for survival surgery (autoclaved tools with hot-bead sterilization between surgeries, sterile gloves, pads and gauze).  Briefly, animals will be anaesthetized using isofluorane.  After shaving the animal, the area is scrubbed with 70% EtoH and then with betadine solution.  In each case, a one-inch incision is made in the skin, and the transponder is inserted.  The wound is closed with sutures, antibiotic ointment applied to the skin and the animal allowed to recover on a heating pad prior to their home cage.  The surgical procedure takes ~5-10 min. Animals are treated with Buprenex and monitored post-operatively daily for three days.
