University of Washington

Molecular Basis of Disease
PATH 500, Winter Quarter, 3 credits

Students receive training in the pathology and pathophysiology of disease by
participating in the UW School of Medicine Pathology 500 course. Pathology 500 is a 1 quarter course that runs in parallel with the School of Medicine's
Hubio520 'Tissue Response to Injury' course offered to Yr 1 medical students.

The course is focused on basic mechanisms of disease at the cell and molecular level. Molecular Medicine and other graduate students taking Path 500 attend lectures and small groups with medical students. They also meet weekly with Pathology faculty who introduce and discuss the anatomy, physiology and pathology background for each week's lecture topics and disease examples. This graduate student-only small group discussion also provides an opportunity to introduce new research related to each week's lecture topics.

Students interested in additional instruction in specific areas of pathology and pathophysiology can take one or more of a series of advanced graduate level courses offered by the Department of Pathology.

Students interested in details on Pathology Department courses should contact Dr. Ray Monnat.
