HHMI/Molecular Medicine Scholars

Funding from HHMI enables us to identify some students enrolled in the Molecular Medicine Certificate Program as "HHMI/Molecular Medicine Scholars". This award provides some stipend support and the opportunity to participate in program activites at the UW and with HHMI/Molecular Medicine Scholars at other institutes.

HHMI/Molecular Medicine Scholars for 2008 are:

  • Christopher R. Burtner
  • Amber Caracol
  • Justin Killebrew
  • Ryan Larson
  • Daphne Ma
  • Blake Nichols
  • Shawna Pyott

Eligibility

Students who are actively pursuing a Molecular Medicine Graduate Certificate are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted in the spring of each year.  To be eligible, the student must have completed the Molecular Medicine Seminar (Molmed514AB / Conj514AB / Path514AB); and must have completed or be enrolled in either Path500 (Molecular Basis of Disease) or Conj513 (Clinical Medical and Human Genetics).

Application Process

  • The application then requires three documents, to be submitted as pdfs:

1.  A statement from the student describing his or her thesis research project and its relevance to human health and disease (no more than two pages in length, single-spaced, font 11 or larger, one inch margins).

2. A short (1/2 page) statement about how you have benefited and will benefit from participating in the Molecular Medicine Training Program.

3.  A letter in support of the application from the research advisor.  This letter should:

(a)   Address the student's particular qualifications for an HHMI/Molecular Medicine Trainee Award, in terms of accomplishments, goals, and the focus of the research project.

(b)  Include an explicit statement that the advisor is aware of and supports the student's plans to pursue the Molecular Medicine Graduate Certificate. The MMTP requires "dual mentorship" of thesis research by two faculty members, one the basic science research advisor and the other with clinical expertise in a relevant area.  If a clinical mentor has been identified, the letter should name that individual.
