Degree Options
Please be advised that our department offers a
M.S. in Materials Science & Engineering and a Ph.D. We no longer offer
defined graduate degree options in ceramic or metallurgical engineering, however
MSE graduate students are eligible to take courses in these areas.
Application for Financial Assistance
A limited number of research assistantships
(RA's), teaching assistantships (TA's), fellowships, and traineeships are
available to highly qualified students. The number of these positions varies
from year to year and depends on funding through grants and contracts.
Appointment to an assistantship or a fellowship position is contingent upon
admission of the student to the Graduate School prior to the beginning of the
term of the applicant's service award. Acceptance by the Graduate School does
not imply financial assistance. Early application is recommended for all
appointments. Direct correspondence or interviews with faculty members
concerning their need for RA's is encouraged. You can learn more about the
MSE Department faculty and their research interests from the
MSE Faculty Directory.
ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE RECEIVED BY
JANUARY 15th, IF YOU WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR AN ASSISTANTSHIP.
Residency Statement: The University of
Washington actively recruits graduate and professional students from throughout
the nation and the world. In order to provide competitive recruitment packages,
the University offers a number of graduate service appointments (e.g. Teaching
Assistantships, Research Assistantships, Fellowships, Traineeships). Such
appointees (both domestic and international) receive full tuition waivers as
well as health insurance coverage for themselves and their dependents.
Non-resident domestic students who do not hold graduate service appointments but
who are in their second or later year of enrollment, may be eligible to qualify
for residency or they may be awarded a non-resident tuition waiver, thereby
allowing them to pay in-state tuition. For more information, please
