Undergraduate Awards

Undergraduate Awards, 2002-03

Mikel Anderson is the recipient of the 2003-04 Kimberly-Clark Scholarship. The $5,000 award covers three quarters of resident tuition with the remaining funds paid to the recipient. Mikel is currently conducting research in collaboration with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and working on the design of magnetic nanoparticles to be used in early diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The Department has also awarded him a Boston Scientific Scholarship for 2003-04.

Bjorn Ballien is the recipient of a Wernecke Livingston scholarship for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Tyler Bergan has been awarded a $500 Seattle SAMPE scholarship for 2003.

David Akishin has been awarded the Paul Bundy Scholarship for 2003-04. The scholarship covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Dalia Chavez has been awarded an NSF Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM) Success in Engineering & Math Scholarship for 2003-04 from the College of Engineering. The award covers three quarters of resident tuition. Dalia is also the recipient of a $750 Seattle SAMPE scholarship.

Deniz Civay received a 2003-04 Fred Brien Scholarship which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

David Farmer is the recipient of a Wernecke Livingston scholarship for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Lisa Fring has been awarded the Louis and Katherine Marsh Scholarship for 2003-04. The scholarship covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Neil Golke is a recipient of a Eugene White scholarships for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Noe Gonzalez has been awarded an NSF Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (CSEM) Success in Engineering & Math Scholarship for 2003-04 from the College of Engineering. The award covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Curt Groth has been awarded a $500 Seattle SAMPE scholarship for 2003.

Tucker Howie is a recipient of a Eugene White scholarships for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Christian Lloyd is a recipient of a William McKay scholarships for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Victoria Lum is a recipient of a William McKay scholarships for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Ravi Mikkelsen is a recipient of a William McKay scholarships for 2003-04 which covers three quarters of resident tuition.

Nam Nguyen, an August 2003 BS graduate, received the third prize (cash award) of the Under-Graduate Poster Session at the Pacific Northwest American Vacuum Symposium held in Septmeber 2003 in Troutdale, Oregon.

Maria Rodriguez has been awarded a $750 Seattle SAMPE Scholarship for 2003.

Bryan Russo is the recipient of the Arthur and Linda Pederson Scholarship for 2003-04. The scholarship covers three quarters of resident tuition. He has also 2 awards from SAMPE: a $1000 2003 Seattle SAMPE Mort Kushner Memorial Scholarship and a $1000 SAMPE International Scholarship.

Jared Silvia, Chemistry undergraduate working with Kannan Krishnan’s research group, received a 2003 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. The scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.

Derrick Speaks has received an award from the Homeland Security Department which includes a two year stipend of $1000 per month plus full tuition. He was one of only 30 engineering awardees from 2500 applicants. Derrick was also named a Mary Gates Scholar and awarded a Winter 2003 Research Training Grant based on his work with Prof. Ohuchi on nano-fabrication of silicon for protein deposition, and he received a 2003-04 Fred Brien Scholarship which pays the equivalent of three quarters of resident tuition.

In April 2003, five seniors were funded through department efforts to attend the annual American Ceramic Society meeting in Nashville. Attending were Tim Chin, Tim Hokanson, Ryan Oakes, Nate Price and Jayne Shelton. This trip gave the students a chance to attend sessions in their chosen fields of research, take part in student-related activities that provided important networking opportunities and visit the ACerS Career Center.

The first MSE Undergraduate Research Symposium was held in June 2003 and nine seniors delivered presentations on their research projects. The students taking part were Tim Chin, Joel Horwitz, Sheeny Lan, Zachary Lingley, Conroy Sun, Scott Vince Cruz, Jared Weaver, Tianlong Wen, Jing Zhang (Wen & Zhang were here as part of the UW/Sichuan Exchange Program).

 

Undergraduate Awards, 2001-02

Maria Soledad Ceja
Received a NSF/CSEMS Success in Engineering and Math Scholarship from the College of Engineering for the 2001-2002 academic year in the amount of $2,500. In the spring of 2002 she was awarded a GEM Fellowship by the National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science for her future graduate studies. GEM Fellows are provided a practical engineering summer work experience through an employer sponsor and a portable academic year fellowship of tuition, fees, and a stipend which may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted.

Timothy Chin
Received Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 academic years. The Goldwater Scholarship Program was created to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Tim is eligible for 2 years 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. Also recd Marsh Scholarship from the CoE for 2001-2002 year; Received 3 quarter Mary Gates Research grant for Aut-01, Win-02, Spr-02; Received 2002 Consulting Engineering of Washington State Scholarship in the amount of $2000; Received $500 2002 Mensa Scholarship; Received Seattle SAMPE chapter scholarship in July 2002 in the amount of $1000.00. Current MSE Honors and MSE BS/MS student. Also given the 2002 James I. Mueller Scholarship Award for outstanding leadership and academic performance during the junior year. Provides $750 stipend to attend the American Ceramic Society meeting in the next academic year. Award is made to a Junior in CerE for academic achievement, professional activities, and exemplary qualities of leadership.

Ashleigh Cooper
In the Summer of 2001, Ashleigh participated in the University of Washington Engineering Biomaterials Research Experience for Undergraduates Program.

Dustin Crogan
In June 2002, the ASM Puget Sound Chapter executive committee has recognized his leadership, dedication and public service to local communities, and gave him a special ASM award for the recognition of his efforts.

Zachary Dizard, MSE senior, participated in the Tohuku University study abroad program for the 2001-2002 academic year.

Joshua Doubleday
Graduated magna cum laude in June 2002 with a double degree in Ceramic Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. He received a Mary Gates Undergraduate Research Training Grant for 2001-2002. The grant supported him while he worked with Professor Scott Dunham in Electrical Engineering. These competitive grants are available to enhance the educational experiences of undergraduates, enabling them more fully to pursue their education and deepen their involvement in work with faculty on research.

Bryan Gruner
Will graduate in December 2002 with MSE Departmental Honors. He received a MSE Department Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year. Given the 2002 Richard L. Norris Award for outstanding senior in ceramic engineering. This award is given to the senior in ceramic engineering who best demonstrates the academic achievement and the potential for professional leadership.

Sean Hsu
Received the 2001-2002 Wernecke Livingston Scholarship. Plans on graduating with a double major in MSE and ME in August 2003, with MSE Department Honors. Given the 2002 William E. Quist Award for outstanding senior in Metallurgy and Materials. This award is given to the senior in metallurgy and materials in the MSE Dept who best demonstrates the academic achievement and the potential for professional leadership that Dr. Quist showed throughout his career.

Firdaus Khan
Received Seattle SAMPE chapter scholarship in July 2002 in the amount of $1000.00.

Larry Kirby
In the Summer of 2001, he participated in a NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Most recently he received Honorable Mention in the National Science Foundation's 2002 Graduate Research Fellowship competition.

Sheeny Lan
Participated in the UWEB/USIRP program for 4 consecutive quarters, Win-01 thru Aut-01. Current MSE Honors student.

Cory Larsen
He received a Seattle SAMPE Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year.

Kirk Lennstrom
He is the first undergraduate in the MSE Department to graduate with Departmental Honors (December 2001), and he was the first student admitted into our combined BS/MS program which will enable him to earn both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in five years.

Zachary Lingley
Received James I. Mueller Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year. Awarded a Mary Gates Endowment for Students Research training grant in May 2002; Current MSE Honors Student

Mariana Loya
Received the 2001-2002 Mort Kushner Memorial scholarship from the Seattle SAMPE chapter in recognition of outstanding community service. She took first place in the Senior/Master/PhD Symposium at the 2002 SAMPE annual meeting in Long Beach, California. Winning for technical presentation and research, her speech was entitled The Fabrication of One-Sided Porous Biomaterial Thin Films Using Plasma Deposition of Hexafluoropropylene. Applications for this work include the coating of stainless steel heart stints to decrease rejection rate by the human body. Her research was supported by the UWEB (University of Washington Engineered Biomaterials) research center and her prizes included an expense-paid trip to the SAMPE 2002 meeting and a $1,000 scholarship. Mariana was also awarded a $1,000 AWIS (Association for Women in Science) scholarship for winter quarter 2001.

Michael McGrew
He received a United States Air Force ROTC Scholarship and received his Air Force Officer Commission on June 14th 2002.

Ricardo Mendoza
Ricardo received a Minority Achievement Scholarship from the UW Office of Minority Affairs and a national scholarship from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. Went to Washington DC in the Summer of 2001 to participate in CAHSEE (Center for Advancement of Hispanics in Science and Engineering Education) where he taught statistics and calculus.

Daniel Pak
He received the Eugene Ainsworth White Memorial Scholarship from the MSE Department for the 2001-2002 academic year. He will graduate this December 2002 with MSE Departmental Honors.

Michael Prowse
He was given the 2002 Stephen P. Harris Memorial Award by the MSE faculty for improvement in academic achievement. He participated in a Summer 2001 Research Experience for Undergraduates at Arizona State University working on electro ceramics.

Michael Shyu
Michael was given the 2002 Harris Award by the MSE faculty for improvement in academic achievement.

Conan Simoes
participated in a co-op with the NASA Ames Research Center in the Summer 2001 and Autumn 2001 quarters.

Conroy Sin
Received 2002 UWEB/USIRP fellowship for 4 consecutive quarters, winter - autumn 2002.

Jeread Sines
Received 2002 ACEC scholarship (the consulting engr scholarship) in the amount of $1000.

Jared Weaver
Received COE Boeing Scholarship for 2001-2002 academic year and a NSF/CSEMS Success in Engineering and Math Scholarship for the 2001-2002 academic year in the amount of $2,500. Current MSE Honors and MSE BS/MS student. Given the 2002 ASM International Scholarship Award for outstanding leadership and academic performance by a junior in MSE. Provides a $500 stipend to attend the ASM/TMS Materials Week meeting in the next academic year. Awards are made on the basis of academic achievement, exemplary qualities of leadership and activities with the student chapter of ASM.

Mark Wiegman
Mark received the 2001 David McQuiston Memorial Award from the MSE Department.

Philip Allen, Geoff Butler, Andrew Cantrell, Timothy Chin, Timothy Hokanson Firdaus Khan, Cory Larsen, Jade Miller, Sean Patrick, Nathaniel Price, Jayne Shelton, Mark Wiegman
Participated in the 2002 SAMPE bridge building contest. They won first place in the student class for best strength to weight ratio and best stiffness to weight ratio using materials supplied in the bridge building kit. They won first place in the professional category for best strength to weight ratio and best stiffness to weight ratio using materials supplied in the bridge building kit. Prizes included a graphite composite/Al softball bat, a graphite fishing rod and a total of $525 in cash.
