Graduate Education Program
MATERIALS SCIENCE AND NANOTECHNOLOGY
Faculty and graduate students of Materials Science and Engineering at the University
of Washington are active participants in the interdisciplinary research opportunities
in Nanotechnology. During the past few years, graduate students from Materials
Science and Engineering have formed one of the largest groups of students to
receive fellowships from this program. If your research interests are
in this area, then we would like to bring to your attention the following opportunities:
-
The Early Bird Summer Research Award in Nanotechnology for starting
graduate students, pays newly admitted graduate students to do research
in the lab of a participating Nanotech faculty member during all or part
of the summer before you start classes, and provides a travel voucher to
attend a national symposium in nanotechnology during the first year.
The application is automatic with a regular application to the Materials
Science and Engineering graduate program, provided you let the Department
know you are interested in nanotechnology by checking the appropriate box
on the Application Form (pdf).
-
First-year grad students can compete for full 3-year Nanotechnology Research
Fellowships, which also include $3000 per year for research expenses.
The call for applications will come out in May of each year.
-
Courses and seminars in nanotechnology are also offered.
-
Training in the use of AFMs, STMs and electron microscopes is also available
in the Nanotech
User Facility (see description of university-wide instrumentation facilities
below).
Further details on these opportunities can be found by visiting the University
of Washington's Center for Nanotechnology
website.
In addition, other facilities are available for research in the field of
nanotechnology:
