Project Introduction and Concept:

Material science is the ultimate search for the perfect material. No longer do we design a product based on the properties of a material . Today we design the material based on the product parameters. Material testing is an integral part of the search for the "perfect" material. Our intention is for the MST students to select and prepare samples. Each team will be responsible for performing selected tests on the samples and collecting data. The MST teams will organize and disseminate all data collected and provide an analysis of the results. The CC and Chem teams will review the analysis and provide feedback to the MST team. Local industry will provide support through materials and human resources.

We will be testing samples of metals, ceramics, and polymers throughout the year. The MST team will visit the CC team during the first round of testing (metals). This will allow interaction between the HS and CC students as well as give the MST students and opportunity to learn how the CC is doing their testing procedures.

Goal:

The Missouri team’s focus will be to establish interactions between the Community College and the High School students through the process of material testing.

Objectives:

  1. The students will be able to prepare samples of materials and to perform and explain different types of materials testing.
  2. The students will improve communication skills through the analyzing and sharing of data with different teams.
  3. The students will establish connections with local industry.

Timeline:

Oct./Nov. - MST field trip to CC and metals testing

Feb. - Ceramics testing

April - Polymer testing
