Investigating the Effects of Heating and Cooling Processes on the Tensile Strength of Steel

Overall Project Concept:

Students at three different High School’s will conduct this investigation and compile their data. The completed test results and materials will be compared and contrasted with a local Community College through the Internet. A progress report will be prepared and submitted to the University of Washington by December 1997, a final report will follow in May 1998.

This investigation will build upon the student’s prior knowledge of metals. The students working in groups will secure samples, subject samples to a variety of conditions (used to change the characteristics of the metals), test samples with pressure from a testing device, compile data using a computer generated spreadsheet, share compiled data with participating High Schools, and provide collected information, including samples, to the Community College. The Community College will run the same tests from an industry standard and evaluate the results obtained by the High School groups. The High School students will evaluate the accumulated data.
