Major Achievements and Progress To Date

The Materials Aspects of Manufacturing Technology Institute (MTI) is aimed at developing a set of instructors with sufficient background and understanding of manufacturing technology who will serve as leaders in the effort of enhancing technology education in the U.S. It is also aimed at providing a model interactive program involving high school and community college instructors and students to assist in program articulation and to assist in the transition for technology students across the high school-community college boundary

This program has reached over 200 participants in its first 2 years of operation. In particular, the following details participation in this program:

In our first year, 1997-98, consisted of the following programs:

Summer institute 18 participants for 15 days

Followup 20 participants for one day

(including other experienced teachers)

Total 290 participant days

For the second year, 1998-99, we expanded on our offerings to develop interest among the secondary teachers and community college instructors to provide information on the subject content of our program and the summer institute:

Intro programs 43 participants, one day

25 participants, one day

Summer institute 23 participants, 5 days

Followup 23 participants, 8.5 days

Total 378 participant days

For the third year, 1999-2000, we plan the following programs:

Summer institute I 16 participants, 5 days

Summer institute II 8 participants, 5 days

(this is site specific training for one school)

Conference 50 participants, 4 days

(as described in my previous e mail)

Followup 25 participants, 1 day

Total 345 participant days

Thus the overall 3 year total will over 1000 participant days and the total number of participants served will be over 210.

In addition to these specific programs, the institute has connections with the following programs, to which participants have been invited:

National Educators Workshop in materials science and materials technology education, with emphasis on hands-on activities. The 1997 workshop was held in November at the Boeing Co. in Seattle, while the 1998 program was at Brookhaven National Laboratory. One day of this program is specific for high school teachers, while the whole program is relevant for community college instructors. One paper resulting from our MTI workshop was presented at the 1997 program and another was presented in 1998.

Symposium on Materials Education, December 1997 and December 1998, part of the Materials Research Society Fall meeting in Boston MA. This symposium features presentations related to high school and community college materials technology, materials science and engineering activities. One paper resulting from our institute was presented at the 1997 symposium and a discussion session related to our overall MTI program was included in the 1998 symposium.

Gordon Research Conference on Materials Science and Engineering Education. This program, held in July 1998 in Plymouth, NH, included a review of a wide variety of teaching tools, methods and laboratories related to materials education at the introductory college level. Dr. Stoebe was conference chair, and Peggie Weeks, former program manager for this project at NSF was a panel discussion moderator. A wide variety of ideas relevant to our institute were presented and will be included in future programs. In addition, the teaching materials used at our Institute were displayed and a variety of college-level participants expressed interest in utilizing these materials to extend programs to the high school and community college level.

Dissemination activities have been undertaken by the program staff and by several participants. As discussed later in this report, Andy Nydam and Eric Helmer (participants) gave materials technology workshops in several locations, and Dr. Stoebe gave several talks and presentations at professional meetings on the outcome of the Institute and the activities involved in it.
